About this tool

GIF is limited to 256 colours, and each pixel can only be fully clear or fully solid, which is why old logos and icons saved as GIF often look jagged. Saving a GIF as PNG gives you a modern, lossless file that every editor and website accepts, with the same transparent areas.

If the GIF is animated, the converter saves the first frame, because a standard PNG is a still image. The colours stay exactly as they were: converting cannot add colours the GIF never stored. The work happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

Questions people ask

What happens to an animated GIF?
Only the first frame is saved. A standard PNG is a still image, so the animation is not kept.
Will the PNG look better than the GIF?
It looks the same. Both formats are lossless, so nothing is lost, but the colours and hard edges the GIF already had stay as they are.
Will the file be smaller?
It depends on the image. PNG usually compresses simple graphics well, but a GIF with lots of dithering can produce a slightly larger PNG.
