About this tool

WAV recordings from field recorders, DAWs and CD rips take up about 10 MB per minute. FLAC compresses the same audio losslessly, usually to around half the size, and decodes back to exactly the same samples. It is the standard format for archiving music and recordings without giving up any quality.

FLAC plays on Android phones, Windows, macOS, most hi-fi players and music servers. The conversion runs on our server with FFmpeg after you agree to the upload, and keeps the original sample rate and bit depth. WAV files can be up to 50 MB, about five minutes of CD-quality stereo, and are deleted within 30 minutes.

Questions people ask

Is FLAC really lossless?
Yes. Decoding a FLAC gives back exactly the same 16-bit or 24-bit samples as the WAV it came from. Only the file size changes.
How much smaller will the file be?
Usually 40 to 60 percent smaller, depending on the material. Quiet speech compresses more than dense, loud music.
What about 32-bit floating-point WAV files?
FLAC stores whole-number samples, so a floating-point WAV is converted to integer samples. That makes no difference for listening, but keep the original if you rely on float headroom for editing.
