About this tool

Writers often finish a book, report or long guide in Word and then want to read it on a phone or e-reader. This converter turns a .docx file into an EPUB 3 e-book. Every Heading 1 starts a new chapter, the table of contents is built from your headings, and images, footnotes, lists and tables come along.

The e-book uses the document's own title if it has one, or else the file name. Text reflows to fit the screen, so page numbers and fixed page layout do not apply. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and your file is deleted as soon as the result is ready.

Questions people ask

Will it work on a Kindle?
Amazon's Send to Kindle accepts EPUB files and converts them for Kindle devices and apps. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most other readers open EPUB directly.
How are chapters made?
Each Heading 1 in your document starts a new chapter, and your headings appear in the table of contents. Use Word's heading styles rather than large bold text so they are recognised.
Can I add a cover?
Not in this tool; most e-book apps show the title instead. The free Calibre app can add a cover image to the EPUB afterwards.
Good to know

Making a better e-book

One Heading 1 per chapter

Chapters are split at each Heading 1, so use Heading 1 only for chapter titles and Heading 2 or 3 inside chapters.

Put the title at the top

Type the book's title at the top in Word's Title style, so the e-book shows it instead of the file name.

Check it on a phone

Text reflows to fit small screens, so wide tables can be hard to read. Open the EPUB on a phone before you share it.
