About this tool

RTF files come from WordPad, TextEdit, older word processors and many programs that export reports. Word still opens them, but forms and colleagues often want .docx. This converter turns an .rtf file into a Word document, keeping the text, paragraphs, bold and italic, lists, tables, line breaks and pictures stored in the file.

RTF can describe formatting in many different ways, so fonts, colours and page settings are replaced with Word's standard styles. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and your file is deleted as soon as the result is ready.

Questions people ask

Can I convert an RTFD file from TextEdit?
No. RTFD is a folder rather than a single file. TextEdit can save it as a Word document directly: choose File, then Save, and pick Word 2007 Format.
Are tables kept?
Yes, tables come across as Word tables. Very complex layouts built from nested tables may be simplified.
Do I need Word installed?
No. The conversion happens on our server, and you can open the .docx in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages.
Good to know

Before you convert an RTF file

Skim accented letters

Older RTF files store accented letters with code pages. They are converted to Unicode, but skim names and foreign words afterwards.

Fonts become standard

Each paragraph gets Word's standard style, so set the fonts you want once through Word's Normal style.

Make sure it really is RTF

Some programs save .rtf files that are really plain text or HTML. If the conversion fails, open the file in a text editor: real RTF starts with {\rtf.
