About this tool

Sometimes you only want the words: to paste into a form, a plain-text email, a script or an app that cannot open Word files. This converter takes a .docx file and gives you UTF-8 plain text. Each paragraph stays on its own line, list items keep their bullets and numbers, and tables are laid out in aligned columns.

Formatting such as bold, fonts and colours is dropped, as plain text has none, and images are left out. You can copy the result straight from the page or download it as a .txt file. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and your file is deleted as soon as the result is ready.

Questions people ask

Will the text work in Notepad and on a Mac?
Yes. The file is UTF-8, which Notepad, TextEdit and every current editor read, so accented letters and symbols display correctly.
What happens to tables?
They are drawn with spaces and dashes so the columns line up in a fixed-width font. Very wide tables can wrap in narrow windows.
Are headers, footers and comments included?
No. Only the main text of the document is converted. Tracked changes are accepted, so you get the final wording.
Good to know

Getting the most from plain text

Links become plain words

Plain text has no links, so only the link text remains. Convert to Markdown instead if you need the web addresses.

View tables in a fixed-width font

Columns are lined up with spaces, so open the text in Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode or a code editor.

Special characters are kept

Curly quotes, dashes and accented letters are saved as UTF-8. If an old program shows odd symbols, open the file in an editor that reads UTF-8.
