About this tool

Markdown is what README files, documentation sites, Obsidian and many notes apps use, but drafts often start in Word. This converter turns a .docx file into GitHub-flavoured Markdown: headings become # lines, bold and italic become ** and *, and lists, links, tables and footnotes are kept. A table that Markdown cannot express, such as one with merged cells, stays as an HTML table, which GitHub and most Markdown viewers display.

If the document contains images, you get a ZIP file with the .md file and a media folder, and the Markdown links point into that folder. Tracked changes are accepted, so you get the final text; comments, headers and footers are left out. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and your file is deleted as soon as the result is ready.

Questions people ask

Which Markdown flavour do I get?
GitHub-flavoured Markdown (GFM). It works on GitHub and GitLab and in Obsidian, VS Code and most static site generators. Tables use pipes and footnotes use the [^1] style.
What happens to images?
They are saved in a media folder next to the Markdown file, and both come in one ZIP. Keep the folder beside the .md file wherever you publish it so the image links keep working.
Are tracked changes and comments included?
Tracked changes are accepted, so the Markdown has the final wording. Comments, headers, footers and page numbers are left out, as Markdown has no place for them.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Open it in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then convert that file.

Getting clean Markdown from Word

Style headings in Word first

Only paragraphs that use Word's Heading styles become # headings. Fix the styles in Word before converting and the Markdown outline comes out right.

Simplify merged table cells

Markdown tables cannot merge cells, so those tables stay as HTML. Split merged cells in Word if you need a plain Markdown table.

Keep the media folder beside the file

Images are linked as media/ paths next to the .md file. If you move the images elsewhere, find and replace that path in the Markdown.
