About this tool

Got notes, a transcript or an export saved as a .txt file, and need it as a Word document? Paste the text or upload the file. A blank line starts a new paragraph and single line breaks are kept inside the paragraph, so the layout matches what you see in your text editor.

Text saved in the older Windows encoding (Windows-1252) is converted too, so accented letters come out right. Symbols such as * and # stay as they are; if your text is really Markdown, use the Markdown to DOCX converter to get headings and lists. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and nothing is kept afterwards.

Questions people ask

Will my line breaks stay?
Yes. A blank line starts a new paragraph, and a single line break stays a line break within the paragraph.
Can I choose the font?
The document uses Word's standard Normal style. Select everything in Word and pick a font to change it in one go.
Is there a size limit?
Files up to 20 MB and pasted text up to 2 MB, which is several hundred pages of text.
Good to know

Getting a tidy Word file from text

Separate paragraphs with a blank line

One blank line between paragraphs gives proper Word paragraphs with spacing. Lines without a blank line between them stay in the same paragraph.

Add headings in Word

Plain text has no headings, so apply Word's Heading styles afterwards to get a navigation pane and a table of contents.

Check the encoding

UTF-8 and older Windows text are read correctly. Text saved in other encodings, such as Mac Roman, can show wrong characters; save it as UTF-8 first.
