About this tool

Some organisations, archives and public bodies ask for documents in OpenDocument Text (.odt), the open ISO standard used by LibreOffice. This converter turns a .docx file into an .odt file with the same text, headings, lists, tables, links, footnotes and images.

The document is rebuilt from its structure, so it uses standard styles rather than copying every font, colour and page setting. That suits most reports and letters; for a heavily designed layout, opening the .docx in LibreOffice and saving it as .odt keeps more of the look. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and your file is deleted as soon as the result is ready.

Questions people ask

Will the layout be identical?
Not exactly. Headings, lists, tables, images and footnotes are kept, but fonts, colours, margins and page breaks use the standard OpenDocument styles. Check the document before you send it.
Can Word open the ODT file?
Yes. Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs all open .odt files.
Do I need LibreOffice to convert?
No. Everything happens on our server; you only need a browser.
Good to know

Before you send the ODT

Open it once in LibreOffice

Check page breaks and the title page in LibreOffice Writer, as these are rebuilt rather than copied.

Add headers and footers again

Headers, footers and page numbers are not carried over. Add them in LibreOffice if the document needs them.

Deal with comments first

Review comments are left out and tracked changes are accepted automatically, so resolve or copy out the comments before converting.
