About this tool
Moving content out of an old website, a CMS export or an HTML email? Paste the HTML or upload a saved .html file, and you get GitHub-flavoured Markdown that is easy to read and edit: headings, paragraphs, emphasis, links, lists, tables, code and images.
Scripts, styles and layout wrappers such as div and span tags are dropped, so you are left with the content. Images keep their links, and a table with merged cells stays as an HTML table so nothing in it is lost. The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc after you agree to the upload, and nothing is kept afterwards.

Getting clean Markdown from HTML
Paste the article, not the page
Menus, sidebars and footers come across too. Copy just the main content for the cleanest Markdown.
Make links absolute
Links such as /about stay relative. Replace them with full addresses if the Markdown will live on another site.
Watch embedded images
Images built into the HTML as data stay in the Markdown as very long lines. Save them as files and link to them if people will edit the Markdown by hand.
