About this tool

Upload a document or paste some text, pick the format you need and download the result. You can start from Word (DOCX), OpenDocument (ODT), Rich Text (RTF), EPUB, HTML, Markdown, plain text, LaTeX, reStructuredText, AsciiDoc, Org or MediaWiki, and convert to any of the others.

The conversion runs on our server with Pandoc, a widely used open-source document converter, and only after you agree to the upload. Your file is converted straight away and deleted as soon as the result comes back to you. Pandoc carries over the structure of a document: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, images and footnotes. It does not copy the exact look, such as fonts, colours, margins or page breaks.

Questions people ask

Which formats can I convert?
Word (DOCX), OpenDocument Text (ODT), Rich Text (RTF), EPUB, HTML, Markdown, plain text (TXT), LaTeX, reStructuredText, AsciiDoc, Org and MediaWiki, in any direction. Old Word .doc files and PDFs are not supported: save a .doc file as .docx in Word or LibreOffice first.
Will my document look exactly the same?
The content and structure come across: headings, lists, tables, links, images and footnotes. Fonts, colours, margins, columns and page breaks are not copied, because most of these formats cannot store them. Expect to adjust the styling if the look matters.
What happens to my file?
It is uploaded over HTTPS, converted in a private folder on our server and deleted as soon as the converted file has been sent back to you. We do not keep a copy.
Why do I get a ZIP file?
Markdown, LaTeX, reStructuredText, AsciiDoc, Org and MediaWiki files point to images instead of holding them. When your document has images, the ZIP holds the converted file and a media folder with the images, so the links keep working.
Are there limits?
Files can be up to 20 MB and pasted text up to 2 MB, one document at a time and up to 10 conversions a minute. It is free and needs no account.
Good to know

Before you convert a document

Use real heading styles

Headings made with Word's Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles (or # in Markdown) become real headings in every format. Large bold text stays ordinary text.

Keep the original

Converting rebuilds the document from its structure. Keep your original file and convert from it again, rather than converting a converted copy back and forth.

Paste only what you need

For HTML and Markdown, pasting just the part you need rather than a whole saved page gives the cleanest result.
